The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, has been a top seller for the simple reason that it ignores trends and pop psychology for proven principles of fairness, integrity, honesty, and human dignity. The Personality Ethic, something he sees as prevalent in many modern self-help books. He promotes what he labels The Character Ethic aligning one’s values with so-called universal and timeless principles.
That’s where the seven habits of highly effective people come in:
They think the problem is “out there” but that thought is the problem. Reactivity becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, and reactive people feel increasingly victimized and out of control. Talks about the concept of Circle of Influence and Circle of Concern. Work from the centre of your influence and constantly work to expand it. Don’t sit and wait in a reactive mode, waiting for problems to happen before taking action.
It is our willing permission, our consent to what happens to us, that hurts us far more than what happened to us in the first place.
Begin With The End In Mind
Start with a clear destination in mind. Most of us find it rather easy to busy ourselves. We work hard to achieve victories promotions, higher income, more recognition. Envision what you want in the future so you can work and plan towards it.
It’s incredibly easy to get caught up in an activity trap, in the busyness of life, to work harder and harder at climbing the ladder of success only to discover that it’s leaning against the wrong wall.
Put First Things First
Spend time doing what first into your personal mission, observing the proper balance between production and builidng production capacity. In order to maintain the discipline and the focus to stay on track toward our goals, we need to have the willpower to do something when we don’t want to do it. We need to act according to our values rather than our desires or impulses at any given moment.
The challenge is not to manage time, but to manage ourselves.
Seek agreement and relationships that are mutually benefical. Value and respect people by understanding a “win” for all is ultimately a better long-term resolution than if only one person in the situation had gotten his way. They plan ahead because they know that lasting success beats momentary gratification.
To go for Win-Win, you not only have to be nice, you have to be courageous.
Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood
Before we can offer advice, suggest solutions, or effectively interact with another person in any way, we must seek to deeply understand them and their perspective through empathic listening. This creates an atmosphere of caring, and positive problem solving.
You have to build the skills of empathic listening on a base of character that inspires openness and trust.
Combine the strengths of people through positive teamwork, so as to achieve goals that no one could have done alone. Through mutual trust and understanding, one often can solve conflicls and find better solution than would have been obtained through either person’s own solutions. Synergy allows us to create new alternatives and open new possibilities.
Without doubt, you have to leave the comfort zone of base camp and confront an entirely new and unknown wilderness.
Sharpen the Saw
Habit 7 is focused around renewal, or taking time to “sharpen the saw.” It surrounds all of the other habits and makes each one possible by preserving and enhancing your greatest asset yourself. Take time out from production to build production capacity personal renewel of the physical, mental, social/emotional and spiritual dimensions. Maintain a balance among these dimensions.
The more we see people in terms of their unseen potential, the more we can use our imagination rather than our memory.
