Most Smart phones have a liyhium-Ion battery that lives longer charged regularly. Unlike the nickel batteries used in old phones, lithium-Ion batteries do best when kept above a 50 percent charge. Repeatedly allowing the battery to drain fully may shorten its life and decrease its overall capacity.

The charging of protocol depends on the size and type of the battery being charged. Some battery types have high tolerance for overcharging and can be changed by connection to a constant voltage or constant current source.
