iOS 14 battery drain issue requires users to reset iPhone

Published

on

Apple has admitted via a support document on its website that provides a solution to poor battery performance on iPhones after the latest iOS 14 update. Several users were experiencing battery drain problems on their devices after upgrading to iOS 14 which has now been acknowledged by the Cupertino giant. The support document does have a solution to this problem, however, it does not involve making changes in the settings or by turning off or on any particular feature. Instead, Apple wants you to take a backup of your iPhone running iOS 14, wipe it clean (reset), and then set up the phone all over again.

Apple highlighted seven issues, including missing or inaccurate data in health apps, fitness or health apps not loading, and increased battery drain on iPhone or Apple Watch. The Cupertino-based firm said users facing two or more of these issues should try the steps mentioned to fix them. Users with iPhone must note that the process involves a system reset.

Apple asked users to unpair Apple watch from iPhone. To do so, open the Watch app, tap the My Watch Tab, then All Watches. Click on the info button next to the watch to unpair. Before erasing all content and settings, iPhone creates a new backup of Apple Watch, which can be used to restore it later.

Users should verify iCloud settings and create a backup. They must ensure that the device has enough cloud storage. To confirm that Health information is backed up, tap the profile picture option in the upper-right area in the Health app. At the bottom of the screen, they can verify when the data was last backed up. If the time shown isn’t recent, wait for the backup to finish and check again.

After finishing the backing up, erase all content and settings from the iPhone from the settings app by tapping on erase all content and settings. Now, restore iPhone and Apple Watch from iCloud backup. Once restored, open the Watch app on the iPhone and start pairing. Tap on restore from backup and choose the most recent backup to restore.

Apple said the steps will also help to prevent ‘future data loss’.

iOS 14 battery draining quickly

It is suggested that many users are facing issues with their iPhone battery as it is draining way too quickly. Apart from the iPhones, some users are also experiencing the same problem on their Apple Watch due to the new watchOS 7 update.

Additionally, the battery drain is not the only problem users are facing. It is suggested that users are losing their Workout GPS routes and health data in the Fitness or Health app. The apps are also failing to load. Several users have been reporting the issue, following which Apple has released an official note that tells how you can fix the problem. For this, you will be required to factory reset the iPhone and even their Apple Watches. Here’s how you can do so:

Head to the Settings app on your iPhone

  • Tap the General option
  • Now select the Reset option
  • Once done, select the ‘Erase All Content and Settings’ option

For the Apple Watch, unpair it from your iPhone by heading to the Watch app and selecting the My Watch tab and then the All Watches option. Finally, select the Unpair Apple Watch option.

Before you do any of this make sure your data is backed up to iCloud, Once, all this is done, restore your iPhone and Apple Watch and you are good to go.
Apple has published a support document on its website that provides a workaround for fixing poor battery performance after updating to iOS 14. The new document comes just after the Cupertino company saw several users reporting battery life issues even after updating their iPhone to iOS 14.0.1. Instead of directing affected users to turn off or on any particular settings, Apple said in the document that erasing all content and settings from the iPhone running on iOS 14 might help to revive its battery life.

The support document lists seven issues that users might have faced after installing iOS 14.0 and watchOS 7.0. While the six initial issues are related to the missing health and workout data as well as inaccuracy of the data available on the Fitness app or Health app, the seventh issue mentioned in the document is specifically related to the “increased battery drain” problem. This seems to be quite a big issue if we look at user complaints on social media.

Apple has noted in the document that if you re amongst the affected users and experiencing “two or more” of the listed issue, you need to unpair your iPhone and your Apple Watch, back up to iCloud, and erase all content stored on your iPhone. After that, the company has recommended restoring your iPhone and Apple Watch from the recent backups.

This is not the first time that Apple is facing complaints around battery performance through its new iOS release. It saw similar issues with some of the big iOS updates in the past as well. However, it seems a little interesting that the company wasn’t able to address the battery draining — as well as the health and workout data related issues — despite bringing iOS 14.0.1 as a bug fix update.
